Some of my essays:

Question #1 : What is important to you? Why?

“James catches, puts up a 3! Won’t go. Rebound Bosh, back out to Allen, his 3-pointer... BANG!” An iconic commentator line in basketball, uttered when my idol Ray Allen hit a corner three to tie the game. Watching that play, I couldn’t help but wonder: how did he stay so composed under immense pressure? His remarkable calmness solidified his legacy as one of the greatest athletes of all time. It was then that I began to reflect on how I could embody that same composure in my own life. I was playing on the biggest stage, in front of hundreds of fans from all around the city. I felt the expectations rising, but my nerves got the best of me, and I made terrible play after terrible play. It was atrocious. But then, I took a deep breath and focused on what I could control. From that point, my nervousness slipped away, and I gave my all to lead my team to victory. The switch from nervousness to calm wasn’t just about basketball; it also taught me a valuable lesson: calmness is the key to overcoming fear. It’s essential to me because it gives me a route through chaos. This lesson goes beyond the field. As head of Dahafest, a multi-school competition, I faced severe challenges, including nearly losing our venue. I stayed calm, solved the issue, and ultimately hosted a successful event. Ray Allen’s influence has shaped my mindset and my aspirations. I will bring this same focus to my studies in Business and Computer Science, fields that demand innovation under pressure.

Question #2 : Tell us about who you are, how would your family, friends and/or members of your community describe you? If possible, please include something about yourself that you are most proud of and why

Breathing, an act so simple for many, has always been my daily challenge. Throughout the majority of my childhood, my parents constantly reminded me to carry a green L-shaped medical device called an inhaler. It also became a symbol of the resilience that defines who I am. My family describes me as both disciplined and caring, a combination they say keeps me grounded and focused on others, even in difficult moments. I don’t take for granted how these qualities have influenced my journey. My family often jokes about me being the “guardian” of the home because I always put others before myself—even at my own expense. They frequently point out how I check on everyone, even when I’m sick. Take my dad, for instance: when he was diving into a stressful project, I made it a habit to bring him his favorite drink, iced tea, without being asked. My mom would notice and later tell me how much those small gestures meant and how they reflected my caring personality. On the other hand, my disciplined flair, developed from managing my inhaler routine, became a pivotal element that shaped how I approach my responsibilities and has been reflected in my ability to balance various activities. In my case, it led me to arrange my activities into urgent, important, and flexible categories. This structure made me an organized and productive individual. I’m most proud of how I’ve turned my flaws into strengths. At UBC, I’m eager to bring the same energy to group projects and academic challenges.

Question #3 : Explain how you responded to a problem and/or an unfamiliar situation. What did you do, what was the outcome, and what did you learn from the experience?

Being unanimously selected as head of my school’s first interschool sports competition in a decade was both exciting and thrilling. I was elected solely because of my strong sports knowledge, but I was inexperienced and unprepared to be thrown into such a pressured position. It had been a long time since my school organized an event of this scale, so I was leading a committee that, like me, had no experience in organizing such an event. Just days before the event, I realized that I had forgotten to secure official permission to use the arena—I was frustrated by my critical error. I rushed to find a solution, knowing that without the venue, the competition could be canceled, disappointing many students who had already registered for the event. After a while, I decided to contact the arena management and request an emergency meeting. When I met the management crew, I wore my finest pants and tailored suit to make a strong impression and began to explain why the event mattered. After hours of negotiation, I managed to secure approval to use the arena. Despite the stress, the competition was a massive success, and it transformed me. It boosted my confidence as a leader because I was able to adapt in unfamiliar situations. Through my studies in business and computer science at UBC, I aim to build on these experiences. UBC’s collaborative environment will provide the perfect platform for me to improve these abilities, preparing me to create a meaningful impact in my chosen field.

Question #4 : What do you think is the most serious challenge that our world faces today? What steps should we take as individuals, and collectively as a society to address it?

Growing up in Indonesia, I witnessed countless victims of sexual harassment within my reach. I learned explicitly what effects sexual harassment and other forms of abuse could have on a person’s life. I witnessed it firsthand—my friends, neighbors, and classmates whose lives were forever impacted because they experienced this traumatic tragedy. Seeing this, I felt like it was inevitable, and I was terrified that at any point in my life, I would experience this misery. As much as I thought it was a dead end to solve the issue, it turns out that there are still many essential actions we can take to avoid sexual harassment. The role of an individual who addresses sexual harassment is critical because it is an unacceptable occurrence that no breathing human should ever face. It should be taught to young children so they can be aware of what could happen in this cruel world. This means that education and awareness are the first major steps. I took the initiative to educate myself and those around me about the importance of consent and boundaries. While individual efforts are crucial, society must take responsibility for addressing sexual harassment on a larger scale. In my case, I created a podcast regarding this issue and discussed ways to avoid sexual harassment. Other steps can include creating programs where victims of harassment are provided with mental health services and other assistance so they can feel supported in overcoming any harm moving forward.

Lesson 1

  • Lesson 1
Start with a Compelling Hook (Capture Interest)

Remember, this will be the first sentence your reader/ advisor will read, in which that means it needed to grab the reader’s attention right away. Instead of starting with “What’s important to me is staying calm,” (by only rephrasing the question) My essay uses a vivid moment from sports commentary to draw readers into a high-stakes situation.

Lesson 2
Set Up the Theme

  • Lesson 2
    Set Up the Theme

This shifts from the exciting moment to personal reflection, showing that the story isn’t just about basketball , it’s about learning something deeper (it's something that's important to me) : calmness under pressure.

Lesson 3
Make it Personal

  • Lesson 3
    Make it Personal

In this part of the essay, I told a real, vulnerable story from my life. This is where readers see how my value (calmness) was tested and developed through failure and growth.

Lesson 4
Highlight Growth

  • Lesson 4
    Highlight Growth

Here, I showed change. Not just telling the reader calmness is important, but showing how I learned to stay calm and how it led to success.

Lesson 5
Connect to Broader Life

  • Lesson 5
    Connect to Broader Life

Now I move from just a basketball game to a life philosophy. This makes the core value more universal and transferable.

Lesson 6
Expand Beyond the Original Story

  • Lesson 6
    Expand Beyond the Original Story

I showed that this value is not a one-time thing. It has shaped how i handle other problems in other areas of my life. And that's why it's important to me.

Lesson 7
Tie It All Back to Your Future

  • Lesson 7
Tie It All Back to Your Future
